“I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart;
I will declare all your wondrous deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, Most High.”
-Psalm 9:1-3
The virtue of gratitude involves surprise and joy. The “surprise” often accompanies an unexpected challenge. On January 5th, I woke up to the realization that I had had a minor stroke sometime in the night. Reflecting on this unanticipated event in my life later, I realized the stroke was actually a blessing for me (more on this on the retreat), which led me to thank God for it.
Gratitude is a spiritual capacity that lightens and energizes. Some call it the wine of the soul. When we drink it, we want to share it with others. What are you most thankful for? The little things and the greater.
When is it difficult for you to be thankful? Some say that thankfulness is a path to contentment. Is this your experience?
